Cracked & Broken Lintels
This site has been designed with our domestic customers in mind, we have much more detailed technical information on our main commercial/trade website.
Lintels are designed to provide structural strength for doors and windows. If your home has cracked or broken lintels you may well notice some of the following problems:
- Sagging brickwork above doors or windows
- Cracking brickwork above doors or windows
- Difficulty opening doors or windows
AWT are able to strengthen and repair cracked and broken lintels. Their highly specialised staff have a wealth of experience that enables them to repair structural defects while maintaining the appearance of your property.
Period Property with Broken Lintels
As shown in the photo, this Victorian house had severe structural problems around the windows. The brickwork above the windows had dropped down and there was severe cracking in the brick wall above the windows.
AWT used their specially designed stainless steel wall tie system to strengthen the surrounding brick wall. The arch lintels above the windows were then repaired. As you can see from the photo, the pointing was reinstated using matching mortar to preserve the appearance of the house.
Failing Lintels & Subsidence
Distorted, cracked brickwork, dropped arches above the windows and cracked brickwork all pointed to serious structural problems.
AWT quickly identified the problem: The supporting lintels above the wide windows were insufficient to support the weight of the brickwork above. There was also some localised subsidence causing cracking below the ground floor windows.
AWT was able to provide a permanent repair that maintains the look of the house.
AWT introduced a special stainless steel corded joint reinforcement system to provide the needed strength above the windows. The same process was used to reinstate the integrity of the wall where it had been damaged by a small amount of localised subsidence. Stainless steel pins were then used to repair the line of the brick window arches.
AWT introduced a special stainless steel bed joint reinforcement system. This forms a composite beam within the existing masonry to provide the needed strength above the windows. The same process was used to reinstate the integrity of the wall where it had been damaged by a small amount of localised subsidence by spanning the effected area and spreading the load. Stainless steel pins were then used to retain the line of the brick work arch.
The cracked pointing was raked out and replaced with matching pointing.
Cracked Lintels
The photos show a brick built semi that had structural defects around the windows. The brick arches above the windows had dropped and the brickwork above the window was cracked.
AWT used their stainless steel joint reinforcement system to strengthen the wall above the windows. Specialist stainless steel reinforcing pins were then used to restore the brick arch lintels.
